Callie’s Hind Leg Injury – A Healing Journey
Another real-life story behind BPE Honey Plus
At Boston Park Equine, our products are always developed with the horses right in front of us. Every scrape, rub or injury teaches us something, and many of our most trusted products have proven themselves through real recovery journeys, not just for ourselves but for our customers as well.
Callie’s story is one of those moments.
What began as a serious paddock accident turned into another reminder of how consistency, good wound management and the right support can help horses recover remarkably well. Kamila tells the story...

Day 1 – The Injury
Callie sustained a significant injury after kicking through a fence, resulting in a large split wound to her hind leg. The injury extended from just below the hock to just above the fetlock, an area that can be particularly challenging due to movement and tension on the skin.
Immediate first aid was essential.
The wound was thoroughly flushed with clean water to remove debris and contamination. It was then treated with human-grade colloidal silver before being packed with BPE Healing Balm (now BPE Honey Plus).
A firm pressure bandage was applied to help protect the wound and support the early stages of healing.
Day 4 – A Setback
As expected with wounds in high-movement areas like the lower limb, the pressure bandage alone was not enough to keep the wound fully closed.
By day four, the wound had reopened. While it can be discouraging to see, this type of setback is not uncommon with injuries around joints where skin tension is high.
The wound was again:
- Gently hosed with clean water
- Flushed with colloidal silver
- Repacked with BPE Healing Balm
- Rebandaged carefully
Consistency and patience are key with injuries like this.
Ongoing Care
From that point forward, bandages were changed approximately every five days. At each dressing change the wound was cleaned and treated again with the balm before rebandaging.
Over the following weeks, healing progressed steadily. Healthy tissue development was clearly visible, and the wound continued to contract and repair with each dressing change.
The aim throughout the process was to maintain a clean, protected environment that allowed the skin to repair naturally while keeping Callie comfortable.
Day 65 – Fully Healed
By day 65, Callie’s wound had fully closed.
Only minor superficial scarring remained — an excellent outcome considering the severity and location of the injury.
Even better, Callie has since returned to work and is back competing in the show ring, doing exactly what she loves.

Why stories like Callie’s matter
Every horse owner knows accidents happen. Fences break, horses spook, and sometimes injuries occur despite our best efforts.
What matters most is having the right knowledge, the right support and reliable products on hand when they do.
BPE Honey Plus (formerly BPE Healing Balm) was developed for exactly these situations — helping support the skin’s natural healing process while keeping wounds protected and nourished.
It’s a product we use on our own horses and one we believe belongs in every stable first-aid kit.
