Echo - A journey of Natural Healing

Echo: A Journey of Natural Healing

The story behind BPE Honey Plus

Every now and then, a horse comes along who quietly shapes the direction of your business and reminds you exactly why you do what you do. For us, that horse is Echo.

Echo came into our lives during the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020. Travel was restricted, the world felt uncertain, and most people were staying home. Thankfully, an animal emergency counted as a valid reason to travel. When we got the call that Echo needed help, my husband set off on a 15-hour round trip — stopping only for fuel and at the pickup point — to bring him home.

Echo had been bred by a dear friend and was injured while at the breakers. As he began his recovery, his owner herself was unexpectedly hospitalised and unable to care for him. We stepped in without hesitation. That’s what horse people do.

The injury

When Echo arrived, he was already a couple of weeks into recovery. He had been seen by a vet and received antibiotics and pain relief, but for a few days had gone without bandaging or treatment. He was sore, swollen and understandably miserable — yet still the kind, stoic horse who quietly loaded onto the float and trusted us to get him home.

His injuries were serious.
He had four wounds down to the bone on his front leg — two just below the knee and two below the fetlock — along with signs of muscle trauma through his shoulder and neck. It was confronting, but not hopeless.

We gave him a quiet night to settle, then began a careful treatment plan the following morning. With heat and swelling still present, another course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and pain relief was needed. Then we turned to what we know best: thoughtful, consistent wound care using natural support alongside veterinary guidance.

Where Honey Plus proved itself

Each wound was dressed with cotton pads and BPE Honey Plus (formerly BPE Healing Balm). From there we applied cotton padding from above the knee to the hoof, followed by vet wrap and elastoplast to secure the bandage.

For the first few weeks, Echo remained stabled for safety and healing. Bandages were changed every three days, then every five, with BPE Honey Plus reapplied each time. As the wounds began to reduce, we introduced BPE Nourish to the edges to support skin elasticity and minimise scar tissue while continuing Honey Plus on the main wound beds.

Healing takes patience — and trust.
Over the next 10 weeks, Echo’s bandages gradually came off for good as the wounds strengthened and closed. He began spending short periods in a small yard and hand-grazing for his sanity. Eventually, he made it very clear he was ready for more freedom — and when the final bandage came off, his joy said everything.

Daily Nourish applications continued to support skin health, flexibility and hair regrowth. Slowly, Echo returned to work. Months later, you would never guess what he had been through. His scars are minimal, his leg is sound, and he is a happy, working horse again.

Why honey?

Our trust in honey for wound care didn’t start with Echo.

Back in 2008, we owned a beautiful gelding named Boston — the horse behind the name Boston Park. After his colic surgery at Sydney Uni Vet Hospital, I spent time speaking with vets and students about wound healing and alternative wound treatments. Honey kept coming up in conversation. Sadly, Boston didn’t make it, but that knowledge stayed with me.

Not long after, a neighbour’s mare suffered a severe fence injury. Months of veterinary treatment and surgery brought little improvement. With options running out, we decided to try raw honey and consistent bandaging. The change was remarkable. Over time, the mare healed — leaving only a small scar and returning to ridden work for years afterward.

Those experiences planted the seed.

Years later, after another mare of ours sustained a flood-related injury, I began refining a formula that would keep honey’s incredible healing properties while making it easier and more effective to use. Straight honey works, but it’s messy and doesn’t always stay where you need it.

So BPE Healing Balm was born — now relaunched as BPE Honey Plus.

What makes BPE Honey Plus different

BPE Honey Plus is built on the proven power of raw honey, supported by carefully selected natural ingredients:

  • Raw honey for its renowned antimicrobial and healing support
  • Coconut oil to nourish and maintain moisture balance
  • Beeswax to create a protective barrier
  • Lavender & tea tree for their cleansing and antimicrobial properties
  • Aloe vera to soothe and support skin repair
  • Vitamin E for skin recovery and conditioning

Each batch is handcrafted in small quantities and kept below 40 °C during production so the honey retains its natural properties. The balm is gently emulsified for a stable, easy-to-apply consistency that stays where you need it — on the wound, not running down the leg.  It's suitable for use on wounds of all shapes and sizes, and just as amazing for people as it is for horses. My kids love Honey Plus!!!

A new chapter for a proven favourite

In 2026, we’re relaunching this product under its new name:
BPE Honey Plus — with Echo proudly featured on the label.

This isn’t a new formula.
It’s a product that has quietly done the work for years in paddocks, stables and tack rooms across our community. We simply realised it deserved to be shared more widely.

From minor cuts and scrapes to more serious wounds (always alongside appropriate veterinary care), this is the product we reach for first. It lives in our float, our stable kit and our home first-aid cupboard — and we truly believe every stable, and even every household, should have a tub on hand.

Echo’s story is one of patience, consistency and trust in both veterinary care and nature’s tools. We’re incredibly proud of his recovery and grateful he played such a big role in the journey of this product.

Here’s to the horses who teach us, the community that supports us, and the simple, powerful ingredients that help keep them well.
