How to Use Repel & Repair for Best Results
A simple, effective routine for irritated, damaged or bite-affected skin
When your horse is dealing with irritated skin, insect attack, scurf, rubbing or slow-healing areas, how you use a product can be just as important as what you use.
BPE Repel & Repair has been formulated to soothe, protect and support the skin’s natural healing process, not just for itch, but also rainscald, grass irritation, or any other skin conditions — but following the right routine will help you get the very best results.
Below is our recommended step-by-step method, used successfully by owners across Australia.

Step 1: Start with Clean Skin
Before applying Repel & Repair, it’s important to remove dirt, sweat, oils and residue that can block absorption.
We recommend washing your horse with:
- BPE Squeaky Clean Shampoo, or
- Another gentle, non-harsh medicated or natural shampoo
This ensures the skin is clean without stripping its natural barrier.
👉 Avoid strong detergents or heavily perfumed shampoos, as these can further irritate already compromised skin.

Step 2: Allow the Coat to Dry Completely
After washing, allow your horse to dry fully before applying Repel & Repair.
Applying oils or balms to wet skin can trap the moisture between the product and the skin reducing how well it absorbs.
Step 3: Apply Repel & Repair Generously
Once dry, apply Repel & Repair over the affected areas and rub in well, ensuring good contact with the skin rather than just sitting on the hair.
Focus on:
- Bite-prone areas
- Rub marks
- Irritated or flaky skin
- Avoid getting too close to the eyes and mouth
Step 4: Rugging (or Not)
After application you can:
- Leave the horse unrugged
- or for best results use an old rug that you don’t mind getting a little oily or “yuck”
⚠️ Repel & Repair is doing its job when it stays on the skin — so don’t use a brand-new or show rug during treatment as its likely the oils will stain it.
Step 5: Daily Application for the First 3 Days
For the initial treatment phase:
- Reapply Repel & Repair once daily for 3 days
This builds consistent protection and gives irritated skin the best chance to calm and repair. If you find there is still product on the skin (depending on how generous you were in applying) Just rub it back in without adding more unless needed.
Step 6: Continue Every Other Day
After the first 3 days:
- Apply every other day as required
If you see the skin looking dry, or notice the horse itching, add more Repel & Repair. This maintenance phase supports ongoing healing and helps prevent further irritation or insect attack. Unfortunately every horse is different, so there is no hard and fast rule for this phase, you really need to monitor and apply as you think is needed.
Important: Do Not Wash for 2 Weeks
Once treatment has started:
🚿 Do not wash your horse for two weeks
This allows Repel & Repair to stay on the skin and continue working without interruption.
After 2 Weeks: Reset & Maintain
After the two-week period:
- You may bathe your horse again using Squeaky Clean or another gentle shampoo
- Once dry, reapply a smaller amount of Repel & Repair as ongoing support
From here, application can be adjusted depending on your horse’s needs and environment. I Like to just run a small amount over any areas I know my horse itches, just to keep that area of skin nourished and protected.
Consistency Is Key
Repel & Repair works best when used consistently and correctly. Rushing the process or washing too soon can slow progress, while patience and routine often deliver impressive results.

🐴 Happy, healthy horses — naturally.
Repel & Repair is safe to use all all livestock, we recommend for dogs that you spot test first as dogs are more sensitive to essential oils, however no ingredients are known to be a problem. DO NOT USE ON CATS
